画像解析において深層学習は圧倒的な性能を誇るが,局所的な特徴に囚われやすく,それが原因で性能不良を起こしたり,画像に細工をすることで判断を誤らせることができてしまったりという問題を抱えている.本講演では,それを解消するひとつの試みとして,位相データ解析を融合する手法について紹介する.

Convolutional Neural Networks are proved to be very useful in various image-related tasks. However, CNN's are inherently shortsighted in the sense that they deal mainly with local information, which results in a deteriorated performance in some cases (e.g., Geirhos et al. ICLR2019). Humans, in contrast, use more global cues to recognise an object visually. Topology provides a way to bring these two approaches together. In this talk, I will discuss how persistent homology can be used to encode the global information of an image (or a volumetric data) in order to help CNNs to grasp the topology of the data.

たくさんのものの中から似ている形を探し出したり、粘土をこねて思い通りの形を造形したり、形に関しては、人間には簡単にできるのに、コンピューターで扱うのは難しいことがまだたくさんあります。急速にAIが進歩する中で、人間の直感の偉大さと不思議さあらためて実感させられる対象の一つと言えるでしょう。人間の持つ俯瞰的な空間把握を、コンピューターにも理解できるように厳密に記述することは可能でしょうか。数学の一分野であるトポロジーは、その一つの手段を提供します。この講演では、トポロジーを使って、形状やその動きを解析する研究について紹介します。特に、CGや工業意匠における三次元モデルのデザイン、折り紙・動力伝達の機構(リンク機構)の解析について、具体的な話題を通じて、現代数学が形状デザインに応用される様子をお話しします。

講演者は学生の時からトポロジー・代数的位相幾何学を専攻し、 数年前までは産学連携など全く考えもしていませんでした。 いくつかのきっかけで異分野との共同研究に関わるようになり、 慣れない土地でときどき大怪我をしながらも、現在それなりに楽しく過ごしています。 基本的には個人で行動する数学者が、言語も文化も異なる異国へ出かけて行くとどんな経験をするか、 「よくある」エピソードを通してお話ししたいと思います。 数学者が産業や諸科学とどう関わってゆけるか、 モデルケースというにはあまり参考にならないかもしれませんが、 ごく個人的な体験からひとつの例を紹介します。

(高校生向け) 自然数,小数,有理数,実数,複素数…と多くの種類の数がありますが,一体その正体は何でしょう.様々な“数”に共通する一つの性質として,足し算や掛け算といった演算ができることが挙げられます.そしてこの性質こそが,数を便利な概念に,コンピューターを強力な道具に仕立て上げていると言えます.今回は,複素数やそれを拡張した数の演算を使って,図形を回転させたり変形させたりすることができるのを見ます.
